Colleges often require one or more recommendation letters, as part of the admissions process. A letter of recommendation is a written reference designed to offer information about your character and work ethic.

Who Should Write the Letter?

Youth are advised to build positive relationships with their teachers, coaches, guidance counselor or community leader. It's much easier for a letter writer to paint a vivid picture of your potential when they know your strengths and talents.

Quick Tips

  • Start early (by the spring of your junior year)
  • Meet with your champion about the letter and share your college aspirations
  • Write down your goals, and share them with your letter writer
  • Remember to write them a thank you letter afterwards!
  • Invite them to celebrate your success with you after you are admitted into college
